Arthur Dantos Buch Die Verklärung des Gewöhnlichen (The Transfiguration of the Commonplace, 1981) gilt seit seinem Erscheinen als eines der bedeutendsten Werke der modernen Ästhetik. Danto versucht eine allgemeine Definition des Kunstwerks zu geben, die auch erklären helfen können soll, warum ein Gegenstand des Alltags als solcher kein Kunstwerk ist, aber zum Kunstwerk mutieren (verklärt werden) kann, sobald er von einem Künstler (Warhol z. B.) dazu gemacht wird. In diesem Seminar soll Dantos komplexe Argumentation Schritt für Schritt erörtert werden. Da Dantos Beispiele hauptsächlich der bildenden Kunst entnommen sind, wird es in dieser Lehrveranstaltung auch um die naheliegende Frage gehen, inwieweit sich Dantos Gedanken auf andere Bereiche der Kunst (Musik, Literatur) übertragen lassen
