Nach jahrzehntelangen Querelen und Wiederannäherungsversuchen findet im Europa der 10er und 20er Jahre des zurückliegenden Jahrhunderts endgültig die Spaltung zwischen den sozialdemokratischen und den sozialistisch-kommunistischen Bewegungen statt. Suchen die einen ihren Frieden mit der liberalen Demokratie, bleiben die anderen auf dem Weg zur totalitären Diktatur des Proletariats, die ihnen als notwendige Zwischenstufe zur wahrhaft demokratischen Befreiung der Menschheit gilt.
Durch Texte von Bernstein, Kautsky, Lenin und Luxemburg (evtl. auch Marx, Engels, Bebel, Liebknecht, Trotzki u.a.) sollen in diesem Hauptseminar die inhaltlichen Gründe dieser Spaltung rekonstruiert werden. Freilich soll hierdurch nicht zuletzt deutlich werden, wo unser politisches und politikphilosophisches Selbstverständnis heute steht.
