220159 Der historische Aufstieg Westeuropas in globaler Perspektive (S+Ü) (WiSe 2017/2018)

Wann setzte der Aufstieg des Westens ein? Und warum vollzog sich die Industrielle Revolution zuerst in England und nicht in anderen fortgeschrittenen Regionen Europas oder Asiens? Die große Mehrzahl der Publikationen zur wichtigen Frage nach Europas Aufstieg ist der eurozentrischen Denkrichtung zuzuordnen. In den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten jedoch wurden von zahlreichen Akademikern und Akademikerinnen, z.B. Vertreter der „kalifornischen Schule“, gewaltige Anstrengungen unternommen, Fragen um „the West and the Rest“ aus nicht-eurozentrischer und globaler Perspektive zu verstehen und zu analysieren. Während Eurozentristen in erster Linie interne Prozesse für den Aufstieg des Westens verantwortlich machen, schreiben „Nicht-Eurozentristen“ externen Faktoren, Kontingenzen, der Verflechtungsgeschichte sowie den historischen Beiträgen nicht westlicher Regionen – v.a. Asien, Afrika und Amerika – größere Bedeutung zu. Die Ursachen für die sogenannte „Große Divergenz“ und die Industrielle Revolution stehen dabei im Mittelpunkt der Debatte.
