Die Zellbiologie beschäftigt sich mit der Funktion von verschiedenen Zelltypen und der Regulation dieser Funktion. In diesem Modul werden die theoretischen und praktischen Grundlagen der Zellbiologie vermittelt. Aufbauend auf die Einführung im Basismodul Theorie I wird in der Vorlesung die Zellbiologie der Eukaryoten umfassend dargestellt. Exemplarisch werden fundamentale zellbiologische Vorgänge bei Mensch, Tier und Pflanze anhand von Modellorganismen unterschiedlicher Komplexität, wie dem Huhn und der Kugelalge Volvox, dargestellt. Zu den Inhalten gehören die zellulären und molekularen Prinzipien der Zellbiologie allgemein, sowie der zellulären Signaltransduktion und der Regulation zellulärer Prozesse im Besonderen, um so ein Verständnis von zellulären Primärvorgängen wie Zellteilung, Zellwachstum, Zelldifferenzierung und Zelltod zu erzielen. Bezug genommen wird auch auf aktuelle Forschungsergebnisse zur Reprogrammierung von differenzierten Zellen zu Stammzellen bzw. Keimbahnzellen, sowie auf die Evolution und Entwicklung von molekularen Bausteinen wie Proteinen, von Mechanismen sowie von Zellen und Organismen. Weiterhin werden diverse Beispiele mit Anwendungsbezug diskutiert (z. B. Zelltherapie, transgene Organismen, Biotechnologie).
