Die Vorlesung ist für Studierende im Masterstudiengang Chemie und Biochemie konzipiert. Ziel der Vorlesung ist es, ein detailliertes Verständnis über Enzyme Engineering zu vermitteln. Der Schwerpunkt liegt bei Enzymen für die Anwendung in der synthetischen organischen Chemie.
Als eine neue Generation an Katalysatoren für chemische Reaktionen haben Enzyme im letzten Jahrzehnt enorm an Bedeutung gewonnen. Enzyme Engineering besitzt hier eine Schlüsselrolle, da es diese Technologie ermöglicht, Enzyme mit gewünschter Funktion zu entwickeln und somit den Fragestellungen und Einsatzbedingungen (z.B. Prozessparametern) anzupassen. Neben dem Engineering von natürlicher Enzymfunktion, liegt ein Schwerpunkt auf der Entwicklung von ganz neuen nicht-natürlichen Enzymfunktionen.
