231164 How is that realistic? Women’s representation in video games. (StGr) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

Video games - many people grew up with them but as children, most of us didn't notice how problematic the portrayal of women characters is in some of them. In this study group, our focus lies on women in video games and how differently they are portrayed throughout the years and genres. We will critically examine games like Red Dead Redemption 2, Grand Theft Auto, Assassin's Creed, and many more. How are the women coded in terms of dress, how do they talk and interact with each other and the male characters? And what could be changed in terms of dialogue options and character customization to create a more realistic image of women? To discuss and maybe find solutions to these questions, we will engage in group discussions, show clips from games, watch video essays, and develop ideas in a creative setting. During the semester, small groups of students will be expected to take over a session and talk about a video game of their choice and critically deconstruct its representations.
