Das Seminar beschäftigt sich mit performativen und paradoxalen Identitäten in der Literatur am Beispiel von „falschen Juden“: literarischen Figuren, die eine jüdische Identität fingieren und/oder sich im Laufe der erzählten Geschichte - durch Verwirrspiel, Verwechslung und ähnliches - als „Nicht-Juden“ herausstellen. Welchen Zwecken werden diese Figuren textintern dienstbar gemacht, welche Funktionen erfüllt das Spiel mit Identitäten, Rollen und Zuschreibungen für den literarischen Text? Durch welche (onomastischen, physiognomischen, vestimentären) Zeichen werden die Figuren als Juden erkannt - und welche (sich wandelnden oder kontinuierlichen) Diskurskonfigurationen zeichnen sich ab? Anhand paradigmatischer Texte und unter Berücksichtigung verschiedener Theorieansätze (Judith Butler, Erving Goffman) wird diesem „doing race“ nachgegangen.
