Im Mittelalter waren die Friedhöfe Orte des sozialen Lebens. Verfolgte suchten auf dem Friedhof Asyl und bauten sich Hütten. Sogar Brot wurde dort gebacken und der Friedhof galt als Gerichtsstätte, Spielplatz und Versammlungsort.
Bis weit in die Neuzeit hinein waren Sterben und Tod öffentliche und religiöse Angelegenheit.
Heute verblassen traditionelle Riten und Zeremonien der Trauerkultur zunehmend, andrerseits sind Aufbrüche zu nennen, individuelle Möglichkeiten zu beobachten, die etwa das Internet anbietet ( virtuelle Friedhöfe).
Das Seminar versteht sich als Spurensuche nach alten und neuen Ritualen, bietet Gelegenheit Grabmäler auf einem Friedhof aufzusuchen, über "Stille Plätze", den "Heldenfriedhof", den "Jüdischen Friedhof", "Grabesengel", "Gruftis" und "Vampire" und den Kampf gegen das Vergessen nachzudenken und ein thematisches Projekt für SchülerInnen zu entwickeln.
