230068 Let's Get Loud! Music and Cultural Resistance (S) (SoSe 2021)

Contents, comment

Music in the Americas owes its diversity to a various range of instrumental, ethnic and linguistic influences, be it of African, European or native origin. From Salsa to Soca, from Reggae to Dancehall, and from Mambo to Hip-Hop, globally speaking, the most influential types of music throughout the last century came from the Americas. We will look at several music genres which make and have made a statement, which have had socio-political implications, either in the form of an ethnic revival or disseminative of certain ideologies in the fields of Gender and African-American Studies. Since media emerges as a space of (re)negotiation and expression of cultural identity, this seminar engages with music as a movement beyond mere entertainment, a platform able to inspire change and foster cultural resistance.
