ENGLISCHSPRACHIGES SEMINAR!
Abstract:
Until today the relationship between migration and development is viewed and interpreted from different analytical perspectives. Principally, these perspectives vary according to the schools of thought that we can divide between the structuralist and agency-based approaches.
In these approaches there is the aim to focus on the specific relationship between migration and development. In this seminar it is intended to offer a systematic approach to the existing and varying understandings in the linkage.
Additionally it is aimed to address the link of migration and development in different contexts of society (e.g. economic, social, institutional and ecologic).
To achieve these aims, central terms, such as international labor migration, economic liberalization, transnationalism and sustainability will be treated. Subsequently, the different phases of the migration-development nexus will be discussed by addressing the political and academic discourses about the relationship in past and present decades.
Based on the critique of political approaches to this relationship, the focus will be set to the transnational perspective, in which it is proposed to constitute a conceptual framework for this relationship.
In addition, the issue of environmental degradation / climate change and its specific relation to migration and development will also be treated. On the basis of a critical examination of the mainstream discourse on sustainable development, an alternative analytical approach to the topic and the relationship will be focused.
