Die frühneuhochdeutsche Epoche der deutschen Sprachgeschichte bildet den Übergang von der sprachlichen Welt des Mittelalters hin zur Neuzeit. Wichtige außersprachliche Bedingungen waren dabei die Einführung des Buchdrucks, die Reformation und die zunehmende Verstädterung. All diese Faktoren haben zur Herausbildung eines überregionalen Standards der deutschen Sprache beigetragen. In dem Seminar soll diese sprachliche Umbruchzeit untersucht werden, sowohl hinsichtlich sprachlicher wie außersprachlicher Merkmale. Neben der linguistischen Analyse spielt auch die Lektüre einschlägiger Texte (die bedeutend einfacher ist als im Mittelhochdeutschen) eine wichtige Rolle.
