Das Kolloquium führt fortgeschrittene und interessierte Studierende exemplarisch an althistorische Forschungsdebatten heran. Dies geschieht in vierzehntägigen Blöcken: Vorträge auswärtiger Wissenschaftler sowie Präsentationen von Bielefelder Abschluß- und Forschungsarbeiten auf allen Ebenen werden jeweils durch eine Sitzung vorbereitet, in denen durch gemeinsame Lektüre ausgesuchter Quellen (im Original und in Übersetzung) und Sekundärliteratur die behandelten Probleme kontextualisiert werden. Dabei kommen auch immer wieder Themen aus benachbarten Disziplinen (Klassische Archäologie, Klassische Philologie) zur Sprache.
