237092 English around the world (S) (WiSe 2013/2014)

Contents, comment

Some variety of English is spoken in one or various territories on all continents. Although there may be varying degrees of inter-comprehension between speakers of English worldwide, it is a fallacy to even imagine that varieties are similar on grammatical, phonological or semantic levels. What this course sets out to do is provide an in-depth examination of English present in selected territories in the UK, the Pacific, the Americas and Africa. We will begin with a diachronic perspective before dealing with socio-cultural, politico-historical issues that have shaped the synchronic landscape of English in these parts. Some key concepts like Standard / Indigenized / Creolized English(es), language contact and language variation, dialecticism, grammaticalization, , language internal/external change and innovation (with respect to phonology, the lexicon, syntax and semantics) will be studied.
