Course Description
The two English courses offered at intermediate level, which run for two hours weekly (10 sessions), are open to all students enrolled in the degree programmes within the Faculty of Health Sciences. The goal is to provide a setting for students to refine and enhance their command of spoken English. Both courses aim at developing communicative competence and improving speaking fluency. Participants will be encouraged to put their language skills into practice through a range of meaningful activity-based tasks which will enable them to reduce anxiety, build confidence, and expand their receptive as well as active vocabulary. In both courses ample opportunities will be provided to give short presentations, participate in panel discussions, take part in team debates and learn to give and receive feedback. A broad mix of topics will be covered, including subject areas in which attendees have a particular interest. On both courses emphasis will be placed on increasing the sensitivity of participants to cultural differences by addressing various aspects of effective communication from an intercultural perspective. Depending on the needs of the participating students, apart from taking a look at selected areas of grammar, typical mistakes of native speakers of German will be dealt with, too.

Although there is no formal assessment on the courses, it will be expected that students regularly attend the course they have registered for, follow up what has been done in class and complete weekly assignments. Based on regular attendance and active participation students will be awarded a certificate of participation.

Registration and Costs
In order to increase the comfort level and maximize opportunities for individual attention, there is only limited availability of places. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Therefore, to avoid disappointment, early booking is advised. To secure a place on one of the courses, students are requested to contact Maren Bredehorst (email: maren.bredehorst@uni-bielefeld.de, office: V6-106, tel.: 0521/106-4802) for registration and further information. All courses are free of charge, yet there will be a minor charge to cover the cost of photocopies and printouts.

Please note: The above courses are not open for students who have already attended one of the previous speaking courses. For these students the Faculty is offering an academic reading as well as writing course focussing on scientific articles, reports and term papers.
