Makromolekulare Werkstoffe sind technisch angewendete Feststoffe, die aus kovalent gebundenen, sich wiederholenden Grundbausteinen aufgebaut sind. Sie begegnen uns im alltäglichen Leben überall und sind auch aus keinem Forschungsbereich der Naturwissenschaften wegzudenken. Zu den wichtigsten Vertretern gehören die Polymere, zu denen sowohl synthetische Kunststoffe (wie Polyethylen oder Polyamid) wie auch natürliche Biopolymere (wie Cellulose oder Lignin) zählen, aber auch verschiedene Kohlenstoff-Allotrope (wie Diamant, Graphit oder Graphen) oder Silikate (wie Gläser oder Keramiken). Makromoleküle bilden eine sehr vielfältige und scheinbar heterogene Materialklasse, deren Eigenschaften jedoch auf gemeinsamen physikalischen Phänomenen basieren.
Die Vorlesung versucht anhand vieler praxisorientierter Beispiele ein intuitives Verständnis für den Zusammenhang zwischen molekularer Struktur und emergenten Materialeigenschaften zu vermitteln. Ziel ist es, durch ein Verständnis der (intra- und inter-)molekularen Wechselwirkungen von der abstrakten Darstellung einer Strukturformel zu einer fundierten Einschätzung der thermischen, elektrischen, mechanischen und optischen Eigenschaften zu gelangen. Der Schwerpunkte liegen dabei auf intermolekularen Wechselwirkungen innerhalb makromolekularer Systeme (Kohäsion, Phasenübergänge, Entropie und Diffusion) und an ihren Grenzflächen (Adhäsion, Adsorption, Oberflächenenergie und Benetzung).
Alle Vorlesungsinhalte sind übersichtlich strukturiert und graphisch ansprechend aufbereitet, um die Konzepte möglichst intuitiv zugänglich zu machen.
Es sind keine Vorkenntnisse oder Teilnahmevoraussetzungen erforderlich. Grundkenntnisse in den Bereichen Festkörperphysik oder organischer Chemie sind förderlich, aber nicht notwendig.
