239662 Utopian Dystopia: Contemporary US-American Travel Literature (Cuba) (S) (SoSe 2012)

Contents, comment

The utopia of a classless and racially equal society on which the Castro régime had been grounding its internal governmental policies and external affairs strategy gradually crumbled down in the 1990s. Only some ninety miles to the North, the United States had been following a colonial policy towards Cuba, based on messianic metaphors and dystopian constructs. Censorship, distortion and the interrupted flow of information between the two countries turned Cuba into a completely foreign field for many US Americans travelling down south in the 1990s and in the early 21st century. Reality clashed with the fabricated images promoted both inside and outside the island. Bearing that in mind we’ll be following the journeys of several US travel writers to Cuba and attempt to bring clarity to the maze of contradictions that their writings reflect. Students can obtain up to 3 LP for oral presentation and regular essay writing.
