Ziel des Seminars ist es, aktuelle Debatten und empirische Fragstellungen aus dem Gebiet der Arbeitssoziologie zu diskutieren. Aus diesem Grund ist die Lehrveranstaltung mit einem arbeitssoziologischen Kolloquium verknüpft, in dem auswärtige Referentinnen und Referenten über ihre laufenden Forschungsarbeiten berichten. Diese Beiträge werden auf der Grundlage weiterführender Publikationen im Seminar vertiefend diskutiert und in größere inhaltliche Zusammenhänge eingeordnet.
Thematisch gliedert sich die Lehrveranstaltung in zwei Blöcke. In einem ersten Teil wird die Debatte um die zeitliche, sachliche wie auch soziale Entgrenzung von formalen Mitgliedschaftsverhältnissen kritisch durchleuchtet. In einem daran anschließenden zweiten Teil geht es um die veränderten Anforderungen an das "subjektivierende" Arbeitshandeln der Beschäftigten.
