Mit dem Enstehen grosser Bilddatenbanken und der ständigen Vergrösserung des Internet stehen immense Mengen an Bildern zur Verfügung, die Suche nach geeigneten Bildern für einen bestimmten Zweck wird aber immer schwieriger.
Das Gebiet des "image retrieval" beschäftigt sich mit Techniken der Indexierung von grossen Bilddatenbeständen, die eine schnelle Suche ermöglicht. Von besonderem Interesse sind dabei Verfahren, die eine "inhaltsbasierte" Suche erlauben, meist werden dazu Bilder oder Bildauschnitte vorgegeben und passende Kandidaten in einer Datenbank gesucht.

Das Seminar beschäftigt sich mit bekannten Retrieval-Systemen und den zugrundeliegenden Techniken aus dem Bereich Computer Vision. Es richtet sich an Studierende im Hauptstudium, hilfreich sind Vorkenntnisse vor allem in den Bereichen Mustererkennung, Bildverarbeitung und Computersehen.
