Friesisch ist diejenige Sprache die nördliche an das Deutsche bzw. Niederdeutsche angrenzt, insbesondere an den Küstenregionen der Nordsee. Als "Altfriesisch" bezeichnet man das älteste schriftlich dokumentierte Stadium dieser Sprache und dies ist der Zeitraum vom 13. bis 16. Jahrhundert. Somit liegt das Altfriesische nicht im gleichen Zeitabschnitt wie das Althochdeutsche und Altsächsische, sondern entspricht zeitlich etwa dem Mittel- und Frühneuhochdeutschen einerseits und dem Mittelniederdeutschen andererseits.
Unter sprachgeschichtliche Perspektive ist eine Betrachtung des Altfriesischen interessant, da man hier auch die Ausdifferenzierung der westgermanischen Sprachen untersuchen kann. Unter soziolinguistischer Perspektive kann man hier die Geschichte einer Sprache auf deutschem Boden, die vom Aussterben bedroht ist, studieren.
In dem Seminar geht es weniger darum, diese Sprache zu lernen, sondern sie mit einschlägigen linguistischen Theorien und Methoden zu untersuchen.
