Ideen und Symbole der Französischen Revolution
Die Französische Revolution ist eines der wichtigsten Ereignisse der westlichen Geschichte. Ihre Wirkung auf Politik und Gesellschaft ist weltweit zu spüren. Sie setzte die Grundpfeiler für die moderne Demokratie und veränderte die Strukturierung der Macht und ihre Repräsentation grundlegend. Unter der Französischen Revolution werden oft nicht nur die Ereignisse von 1789 verstanden, sondern eine Kette von Vorkommnissen, die sich bis ins 19. Jahrhundert erstrecken. Zwei symbolische Ereignisse sind besonders hervorzuheben: der Sturm auf die Bastille und die Enthauptung von Ludwig XVI. Beide haben ihre Wurzeln in den langsamen Veränderungen, die bereits seit der Aufklärung stattgefunden hatten. Diese betreffen die Erosion der religiösen Begründung von Politik und Gesellschaft und tiefgreifende Neuorientierungen ihrer Repräsentationssysteme. Zugleich haben die politischen und sozialen Umwälzungen des 18. Jahrhunderts eine langfristige Wirkung, die noch bis heute reicht. Das BA-Seminar zeigt, wie Ideen und Symbole mit historischen Veränderungen verbunden sind und welche Entfaltungskraft sie in der Geschichte der Demokratie haben.
