230737 Englisch: English Special Topics: The Black Experience in America, Level C1 (S) (WiSe 2016/2017)

Contents, comment

In this course we will study the Black experience in the U.S. through the eyes and voices of African Americans. Using excerpts from books, songs, films and poems we will trace the route from slavery to the era of segregation and the civil rights movement and finish the course with a look at the situation of Black Americans today, focusing on rap and hip hop, the Obama era and mass incarceration ("Orange Is the New Black"). This will be a very stimulating course in which you will learn a great deal about the unwritten history of the U.S.A.
