Die drei autobiographischen Bücher des Literaturnobelpreisträgers Elias Canetti (Die gerettete Zunge: Geschichte einer Jugend, Die Fackel im Ohr: Lebensgeschichte 1921-1931, Das Augenspiel: Lebensgeschichte 1931-1937) werden zu den großen Erinnerungswerken der Weltliteratur gezählt. Das Seminar befaßt sich mit den Prinzipien der autobiographischen Schreibweise Canettis sowie mit seinem Konzept der "Lebensgeschichte" vor dem Hintergrund seines kulturtheoretischen Hauptwerkes Masse und Macht. Darüber hinaus wird die Veranstaltung Aspekte des autobiographischen Erzählens im 20. Jahrhundert erörtern und in die Theorie und Geschichte der Autobiographie einführen.
