In this study group we will discuss protest poetry, and how poetry (and song) is used as a form of protest. One aspect of the group's work will be close analyses of protest poems and song lyrics to discover the poetic devices employed by the disenfranchised, disempowered and oppressed as they talk back to power and articulate their resistance. The group will also explore the political and personal circumstances that have led writers to craft poems and songs of resistance and change.

As this is a STUDENT-LED STUDY GROUP and not a seminar taught by a salaried member of staff, all participants are expected to show great commitment, solidarity and support and make full contributions in terms of deciding on content, doing research, presenting material, participating in discussions, preparing for sessions, etc. The organiser simply provides the framework for the group's mutual work, to which all contribute.
