This class is called "Academic Writing in English“. Of course, it is impossible to
prepare a perfect text for review in the course of one semester (13 weeks). What we
can do is cover and practice the most important aspects and also to learn how to
continue learning after the class is over. This means discussing and practicing in
small-group activities, single activities and large group discussions in class and
dealing with some aspects of the language that cause more advanced learners
difficulty (especially German learners), as well as strategies we can use to learn more
efficiently. It also means reflecting on our own learning process. Among other things,
we will deal with:

• Academic English as a writing style
• Thesis Statements and Transitions
• Avoiding Plagiarism
• Hedging and Quantifying
• Impersonal uses in English
• Proper use of Numbers and Data
• Self-Editing

Grammar is not a central point or focus in this class. That said, we will review
grammar issues and I will correct grammar issues in the writing assignments. We will
read texts and listen to podcasts or watch short films that are a basis for the class
activities. This material is a starting point for the tasks done in the classes, and helps
us more organically discover and learn the vocabulary used with each topic. It also
provides practice in fluent comprehension in reading and hearing. However writing is
the core of the class.
