In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts kam es in verschiedenen europäischen Ländern zu einer starken Auswanderungsbewegung in verschiedene amerikanische Staaten, die bis zum Ausbruch des 1. Weltkriegs anhielt. Der Kurs untersucht vornehmlich anhand der deutschen, spanischen und italienischen Auswanderung nach Argentinien, Chile, Brasilien und in die USA einerseits die Hintergründe dieser Auswanderungswelle, andererseits die Lebenssituation der Auswanderer in den Aufnahmeländern zwischen Integration und Abschottung.
