How and under what conditions do societies in an ever more mobile world manage or fail to ensure the social protection of their members in times of increasing insecurity, particularly in the context of environmental deterioration? Social protection is necessary for people in order to lead a decent life but it is currently not adequately provided to a large part of the world’s population. Under these conditions, people seek in-situ solutions to problems they might or might not voice, migrate or use a combination of responses. The effects of environmental change on social protection can be expected to be most important in those parts of the world, in which people’s livelihoods predominantly depend on access to land and natural resources. Environmental deterioration may include natural as well as man-made changes to the environment. The seminar will first look into the conceptualisation of the linkages between environmental change, migration, and social protection and then inquire in more detail into different case studies.
Knowledge in development and livelihood studies including the role of migration as a livelihood strategy are of great advantage.
