Was macht heute eine Stadt aus? Eine gewisse Einwohnerzahl, zahlreiche Einkaufsmöglichkeiten und kulturelle Angebote, das Vorhandensein eines öffentlichen Nahverkehrs, von Restaurants, Bars und Cafés, von Ämter und Institutionen, meist mehrerer Krankenhäuser… Die Liste ließe sich wohl lange fortsetzen.
Doch was macht im Unterschied dazu eine mittelalterliche Stadt aus? Inwiefern unterscheidet sie sich von der modernen Stadt und was sind ihre Charakteristika? Wie ist sie politisch organisiert? In welche sozialen Gruppen gliedern sich ihre Bewohnerinnen und Bewohner? Diesen Fragen werden wir im Kurs gemeinsam nachgehen und uns der mittelalterlichen Stadt und ihren Einwohnern anhand exemplarischer Quellenauszüge und ausgewählter Forschungsliteratur nähern. Der Schwerpunkt des Kurses liegt dabei auf der Analyse und Interpretation unterschiedlicher Quellenausschnitte zur Stadtgeschichte.
