Der schottische Empirist David Hume (1711–1776) ist einer der wichtigsten Denker der Philosophiegeschichte. In seiner Untersuchung diskutiert Hume Fragen aus der Philosophie des Geistes (Wie funktioniert der Geist? Können Tiere denken?), der Erkenntnis- bzw. Wissenschaftstheorie (Sind induktive Schlüsse gerechtfertigt? Was ist Kausalität?) und der Religionsphilosophie (Sollen wir an Wunder glauben?). Dabei entwickelt er eine einige der einflussreichsten Argumentationslinien der neuzeitlichen Philosophie.

Wir wollen im Seminar ausgewählte Kapitel des Enquiry lesen und diskutieren. Dabei werden wir die englische und die deutsche Ausgabe einigermaßen gleichberechtigt verwenden; wer irgend kann, sollte allerdings den Text im englischen Original lesen. Die Teilnehmer mögen sich bitte eine der unten angeführten Ausgaben des Enquiry besorgen.
