230521 How to Make a Dictionary (S) (WiSe 2009/2010)

Contents, comment

Goals:

The goal of the class is to provide answers to questions such as the following:

  • What kinds of information is required in order to create a word?
  • How is this information represented in dictionaries?
  • What kinds of other information do dictionaries contain?
  • How are dictionaries constructed?
  • What kinds of dictionaries there are, and what is the difference between a "normal" dictionary, a glossary and an encyclopedia?
  • Which are the best dictionaries?

In more general terms, the class is concerned with the theory and practice of lexicography, a field in which all language teaching and other linguistics professionals are involved in different ways.

Course plan

This course will provide essential insights and introduction to the
following linguistic areas: morphology, lexical semantics, lexicography, lexicon
theory and (linguistic) data modelling.

Qualifications

As this class is obligatory you can get three credit points, based on
active participation and the final exam. For exchange
students of other universities that is the equivalent of four ECTS
points. Required are:
1. Regular attendance.
2. Regular homework which is comparable to a "Learner Diary" or "Portfolio". Three homeworks have to be handed in in writing; students need to be able to present this homework at tutorial sessions.
3. Successful end of term test performance.

Addressees:

1. B.A. students in semesters 1-3
2. MEd students
3. ERASMUS students with an interest in lexicography.

How to make a dictionary is only offered in the winter term, so it should receive a rather high priority at the beginning of someone's studies.

Requirements for participation, required level

This class is a basic class, it is recommended to take this class in the same semester as the introduction to linguistics. Both are offered only in the winter term.

Bibliography

There are very few suitable introductions to lexicography, and for this reason extensive materials will be provided on the course website. References to relevant introductory books on different aspects of lexicography will be provided in the lectures.
