Der Terminus „epische Kurzformen“ (oder „Kurzepik“) bezeichnet zunächst alle kleinen literarischen Erzählformen im Gegensatz zur Großepik, also Epos und Roman. Darüber hinaus werden „einfache“, vorliterarische Formen (Legende, Märchen, Sage, Mythe, Rätsel, Spruch, Witz etc.) von literarischen Formen (Kunstmärchen, Kunstanekdote, Kurzgeschichte etc.) unterschieden.
Das Seminar führt in Theorie und Geschichte epischer Kurzformen ein. Zunächst werden die wichtigsten gattungstheoretischen Ansätze (Andre Jolles, K. Ranke, Roman Jakobson, Monika Schrader) vorgestellt. Darüber hinaus sollen auf dieser Grundlage ausgewählte Formen epischer Kurzprosa gelesen und analysiert werden. Hierbei werden Aspekte der geschichtlichen Entwicklung, der literarischen Struktur sowie Rezeptions- und Funktionsbezüge berücksichtigt. Das Seminar liefert also einen vergleichenden Überblick über die Vielzahl der Formen und vermittelt rezeptions- und erzähltheoretische Grundbegriffe zu ihrer Analyse.
