In the seminar "Argumentation and Critical Reading," you will develop skills needed throughout your English studies as well as in professional and private contexts after you graduate. The course offers you the chance to hone argumentation skills to describe complex interrelationships and diverse, perhaps even controversial, perspectives. In the critical reading component, you will practice techniques that help you to grasp the main points of academic texts quickly and accurately and how to voice your own personal critical thoughts on them.
The seminar will take place in hybrid format - in the classroom and simultaneously via Zoom. The material for the sessions will be presented in class and/or uploaded in the Moodle course.
BM1 seminars are typically taken in the first or second semester.
To be given in class.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
To complete the "Studienleistung" in this seminar, you need to participate actively in at least 70% of the class and homework activities.
There is one Module Examination, the Language Proficiency Test, for all the Language Practice courses. (Basismodul 1). You do not have to take the test in the same semester as the Speaking & Communication seminar, and you should not take it until you have taken part in all the BM1 seminars.
A corresponding course offer for this course already exists in the e-learning system. Teaching staff can store materials relating to teaching courses there:
