The Balkan region represents a space that is characterized by a broad range of migration processes. Focusing mainly on the countries of former Yugoslavia, in the seminar, we will explore different types of migration within and beyond the region. The seminar has a twofold goal: Students learn about different types of migration and current concepts in migration research on a theoretical level and get insights into how they play out in a particular region. This will include a range of issues such as labour migration within the region and to Western Europe, conflict-induced displacement (cross-border and internally), return migration, diaspora involvement and diaspora policies, migration and development, the European border regime as well as recent movements of refugees transiting through the Western Balkans.
It is recommended that participants either have preknowledge in migration sociology (or the region) or in parallel take the course on "Global Mobilities" offered in WS 2017/18.
