Das kurz nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg veröffentlichte Opus Magnum des Bonner Romanisten Ernst Robert Curtius gehört ohne Zweifel zu den wirkungsmächtigsten Monographien der neueren Literaturwissenschaft. So stammt etwa der Begriff des "Topos" in der Bedeutung, in der er heute gemeinhin Verwendung findet, von Curtius. Auch wenn manche Aussagen und Wertungen relativiert werden müssen und das Werk die Zeichen seiner Entstehungszeit nicht verhehlt, so ist es doch bis heute ein ungewöhnlich anregendes Kompendium geblieben. In einzigartiger Weise gerät die gesamte "abendländische" Literatur von Homer bis Goethe (und darüberhinaus) in den Blick.
