Das Seminar versucht einen Eindruck von der Einheit und der Entwicklung von Talcott Parsons' Soziologie zu geben. Wir werden uns zunächst mit den Startpunkten der Theorieentwicklung in "The Structure of Social Action" (1937) befassen, um danach entscheidende Schritte der konzeptuellen Entwicklung der Theorie zu vergegenwärtigen: Pattern Variables; Vier-Funktionen-Schema; Theorie symbolisch generalisierter Kommunikationsmedien; Evolutionstheorie und historische Entwicklung von Gesellschaften. Ein Akzent wird schließlich auf den Leitthemen des Spätwerks von Talcott Parsons liegen: Religion und Tod; Gesundheit; Universität. Das Seminar will ausdrücklich auch zu eigenständigen Arbeiten an und mit der Theorie von Talcott Parsons ermuntern und räumt diesbezüglichen Interessen Raum ein.
