Die im Frühjahr 2005 in Frankreich und den Niederlanden abgelehnte europäische Verfassung gilt manchen als Hinweis darauf, "Europa" stelle für seine Bewohner eine Überforderung dar. Hierbei wird stillschweigend vorausgesetzt, "Europa" sei ein Zukunftsentwurf. In diesem Lektürekurs soll vom Gegenteil ausgegangen und am Beispiel ausgewählter Quellen untersucht werden, wie im Verlauf des 20. Jahrhunderts vielfältige Vorstellungen und Erfahrungen von "Europa" zum Tragen kamen. Dabei interessiert, wer diese Begegnungen wünschte und erlebte, wie die Begegnungen zumindest in Teilen institutionalisiert wurden, welchen Bedeutung und welchen Stellenwert "Europa" dabei einnahm, inwieweit und wie "Europa" eine transnationale Konstruktion ist.
