Die Familie gilt gemeinhin als eine anthropologische Grundeinheit, der kaum Historizität zugestanden wird. Allenfalls räumt man ein, dass diese "natürliche" soziale Einheit in der Moderne an Umfang verloren, von der Groß- zur Kleinfamilie geschrumpft sei. Die Vorlesung nimmt einen radikal anderen Standpunkt ein und geht von der Geschichtlichkeit aller Aspekte von Familie aus. Es sollen die unterschiedlichen europäischen Familienmodelle diskutiert und die Veränderungen von Familie dann exemplarisch untersucht werden unter anderem mit Blick auf Kinder, Alte, Geschwister, Ehestiftung, Ehescheidung und die Familie als ökonomische Einheit.
