Die Vorlesung gibt einen Überblick über die Entwicklung der Literaturgeschichte und Theorie des Dramas im 19. Jahrhundert und setzt dabei einen besonderen Schwerpunkt auf die erste Hälfte des Jahrhunderts. Ausgehend von den späten Stücken Schillers (‚Braut von Messina‘, ‚Jungfrau von Orleans‘, ‚Maria Stuart‘), deren vorbereitende Lektüre sehr empfohlen wird, und von Schillers Theatertheorie werden Grundlagen und Entwicklungslinien für das weitere 19. Jahrhundert entfaltet. Sie sollen dann an Hölderlin, Kleist, Hebbel, Büchner u.a. weiter diskutiert werden. Verschiedene Gattungen (Komödie, Tragödie, Geschichtsdrama), Medien und Formen (Schauspiel, Oper) sollen dabei vergleichend in den Blick genommen werden.
