230581 Race Relations in America (S) (SoSe 2006)

Contents, comment

In this class we will look at race relations in the United States both from an historical and a contemporary point of view. There will be a series of class sessions dealing with the general and/or contemporary topics of

(a) academic and popular concepts of race,
(b) state policy on race and equality of opportunity,
(c) popular attitudes toward race
(d) race in the media

and with the historical relationship between Anglos and

(a) Native Americans
(b) African-Americans
(c) Hispanics and
(d) diverse immigrant groups

Credit for this class can be gained on the basis of regular attendance and work and a final written exam. It is possible for B.A. as well as Magister and Staatsexamen students to choose a topic from this seminar for a report or term paper or, in the latter cases, for the final exam.

There will be a reserved reading shelf.
