In the past decades, World Englishes (WE) has firmly established itself as a subdiscipline within English linguistics, acknowledging the polycentricity of the English language and the wide range of varieties of English that have come into existence as a consequence of the language’s transplantation to many regions around the globe. As a research paradigm, WE is inherently empirical and interdisciplinary in nature, traversing a wide range of linguistic approaches, subdisciplines, and methodologies. In this course, we will therefore be looking at a number of different methodological approaches to WE research, such as corpus linguistics, ethnography, surveys etc., that have been successfully applied more recently. Furthermore, we will be looking at a number of studies investigating World Englishes, reflecting different research agendas as well as theoretical and methodological orientations. We will discuss the advantages and limitations of approaches, but you will also spend a significant amount of time in the field, as you will design and conduct your own small-scale research project and present the results of your investigation at the end of the semester.
