Filmische Darstellungen indigener Völker finden sich in zahlreichen Genren: vom klassischen Western, ethnographischen Dokumentarfilmen, bis zu Hollywood-Blockbustern wie „Der mit dem Wolf tanzt“ oder „Avatar“. Zum einen beschäftigt sich der Kurs mit der Darstellung und Darstellbarkeit historischer Ereignisse und Zusammenhänge im Film. Dabei wird ein besonderes Augenmerk auf die Konstruktion von Fremdbildern sowie die Inszenierung historischer Schlüsselereignisse des Kulturkontakts gelegt. Zum anderen werden aber auch die filmischen Repräsentationen selber historisiert und in ihren politisch-kulturellen Entstehungszusammenhang gestellt. Über die Frage der filmischen Repräsentation hinaus greift der Kurs auch Aspekte der medialen Produktion (z.B. autoethnographischer indigener Film) sowie der medialen Partizipation und der Rezeption auf.
Als Präsenzzeiten werden 10 Sitzungen á drei Stunden veranschlagt.
