This class will provide a survey about economic, environmental, and political developments between 1500 and 1650. We start with the history and chronology of the "European Expansion" (1492) and continue with economic trends such as the inflation that took place in the 16th century. We will also look into global demographic trends, which will allow us to lend perspective to the subject we deal with in the seminar (as the second part of this Master Module). Last but not least, we also deal with environmental and climate history. The "Little Ice Age" peaked in the 17the century. What were its impacts on different societies around the world? How was it involved in what some have called "the General Crisis of the 17th Century"? And was there such a crisis?
