This class will deal with a variety of visual and literary representations of the hotel, predominantly from the North American and British cultural contexts. We will investigate the aesthetic function of the hotel as a setting as well as its meanings as a space of transitions, confrontations, and encounters between strangers, and in doing so will unravel the social, cultural, and ideological significance of these representations.
