Den frühen Publikationen von Niklas Luhmann liegt eine originelle Lesart des sozialwissenschaftlichen Funktionalismus zugrunde, die durch seine späteren Texte nicht in jeder Hinsicht überboten wird. Die Übung soll in diese Lesart anhand von dafür geeigneten Texten einführen. Vorkenntnisse in soziologischer Systemtheorie sind nicht erforderlich, wohl aber die Bereitschaft zu mitunter strapaziösen Lektüren.
