In this class, we examine polar (yes/no) questions from various linguistic angles: what is their cross-linguistic morpho-syntactic variation? What is their semantics? How are they used in discourse? How can they be studied experimentally? We will have an in-depth look at declarative questions, i.e., questions expressed by means of declarative sentences, often in combination with question tags or intonational marking (e.g., 'You like spaghetti, don't you?'). Finally, we examine responses to positive and negative polar questions, and how they differ across languages.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
