digital, live zur genannten Zeit & z.T. digital, im Selbststudium (online synchron/asynchron)

In this seminar, we communicate bilingually in English and German: Submissions (Studienleistungen/Prüfungsleistungen) can be made in German as well as English. In addition to gaining international perspectives on inclusive education practices, an additional goal of this course is to enable the students to practice their English vocabulary related to the main topics addressed in the course. The lecturers will be happy to provide you with language support. In any case, we can always use German, should there be the need for it. What makes this course special is that it will be a collaborative course with two guest lecturers from Canada. This means that you will be able to take a transnational view on the themes of the course and engage in conversation with our Canadian guests. We cordially invite you to join us! The three lecturers will each be responsible for one or two blocks in the seminar (see syllabus of the course as soon as published in LernraumPlus). The German lecturer will be present during every session. If there are questions in German, for example, he will assist with translations. Together we will work collaboratively on the topics.

Inclusive education has become a global norm, so that the debates on inclusive school and classroom development also have stronger international and transnational references. Therefore, we will start with an overview of (theoretical and methodological) questions and approaches of inter- and transnational comparative educational research focusing on inclusive and exclusive practices around the world. In addition, we will focus on general characteristics and properties of education in order to be able to reflect on the functionality of national systems in the area of inclusive education. One of the aims is to understand inter- and transnational phenomena in education in their respective political, cultural, social and historical contexts.

For this, we will first look at research on inclusive and exclusive practices in Germany: We will discuss historic and current practices and in how far inclusive or exclusive patterns became apparent. Then, in the blocks of the Canadian guests, we will focus on understanding students with special needs for supports in school by classroom instruction, adaptation and environmental modification. Last, but not least, we will focus on how the needs of newcomer students in Canada can be met. With the influx of immigrants and refugees in Europe and elsewhere in the world in the last few decades due to the ongoing armed conflicts in the Middle East, preparing teachers to engage in trauma-informed practices that create inclusive and supportive learning environments for these newcomer students has global significance.

Thus, in this course, we will primarily focus on Germany and Canada, as well as their inclusive school and teaching developments. Students gain – however – also an understanding of the inter- and transnational connections of the contemporary school system that stretch out far beyond the named countries. Global processes can be reflected upon against the background of the local. Questions of human rights and their influence on national systems and local practices, among other things, play a role here. Foci of this seminar will be cultural and social issues that help/hinder the becoming of a multicultural and global society.
