Abstract:
The trillions of bacteria residing in our gut, known as the gut microbiome, are essential not only for digestion but also for brain health. These microbes churn out a variety of metabolites, signaling molecules that can influence neuronal activity, behavior, and cognition. This exciting area of research explores how gut metabolites modulate neurotransmitters, influence brain plasticity, and may even play a role in neurodegenerative diseases. Here, it is important to note that the foods we consume don't just nourish our bodies, they also influence our brains. When we eat, the gut microbiome breaks down food components into various metabolites. These metabolites then act as messengers, traveling through the bloodstream to reach the brain. There, they can interact with brain cells, influencing their energy production and modulating the synthesis of neurotransmitters, like serotonin and dopamine, which regulate mood, learning, and memory. As we age or develop neuropathologies, the makeup of our gut microbiome can shift. This disrupts the usual production of metabolites. Some studies suggest an increase in potentially harmful metabolites, while others may become deficient. This altered metabolite profile can then negatively impact brain function, potentially contributing to cognitive decline or worsening the symptoms of neurodegenerative diseases. By unraveling these mechanisms in greater detail, we may open doors to novel therapeutic strategies for brain-related conditions.

Lehrende/Verantwortliche:
Prof. Dr. med. Björn Spittau (Prodekan für Forschung und Karriereentwicklung, Med Fak OWL)
