300450 Introduction into Development Studies (Ü) (WiSe 2011/2012)

Contents, comment

The first block of the seminar offers an overview on conceptual issues including the definition of (un)derdevelopment and competing interpretations of North-South relations of the modernization and dependence theory.

The second block will introduce into the most important actors and institutions. This includes crucial structural challenges such as the “debt trap” and the subsequently initiated structural adjustment programs, extended conditionality of development aid and increasing role of civil society. The question how development policies can be adapted more closely to the targeted beneficiaries will be touched.

The final block will focus on challenging transnational issues, in particular on migration and environmental change.
