Das Altertum bietet ein reiches Feld von Anschauung und Erkenntnis, wenn es zu verstehen und zu zeigen gilt, wie aus Vergangenheit Geschichte und aus Überlieferungen historische Einsichten werden. Es bietet außerdem vieles, was spannend, sinnfällig und fremdartig ist, fördert und speist also auch die Neugierde. Der Kurs legt die Grundlage dafür, Kindern im früheren Lernalter einen Weg in die griechisch-römische Antike und damit in die Geschichte überhaupt zu weisen. Dabei werden exemplarisch am Römischen Kaiserreich zentrale Lebensformen und Alltagserfahrungen antiker Menschen (Wohnen, Ernährung, Arbeiten, Feiern, Familie, Kindererziehung, Religion, Krieg, Werteordnungen, politisches Leben u.a.m.) behandelt. Zusätzlich zur Vermittlung einer fundierten Sachkenntnis führt der Grundkurs in die Grundlagen des historischen Arbeitens und wissenschaftlicher Textarbeit ein. Die Veranstaltung wird von einem Tutorium begleitet, außerdem ist eine mehrtägige Exkursion verpflichtender Bestandteil des Grundkurses.
