Die ersten beiden Jahrhunderte n. Chr. gelten als die Hochphase der römischen Kaiserzeit: Der wirtschaftliche Aufschwung kam weiten Teilen der römischen Gesellschaft zugute. Der Lebensstandard war vergleichsweise hoch, die Städte prosperierten und viele gesellschaftliche Gruppen konnten die ökonomischen Chancen für einen sozialen Aufstieg nutzen. Wir wollen daher den Zusammenhang von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft in der römischen Kaiserzeit nachzeichnen. Zu diesem Zweck werden wir die kaiserzeitlichen Ökonomien in ihren unterschiedlichen Facetten genauer betrachten, um dann in einem zweiten Schritt den Einfluss wirtschaftlicher Faktoren auf die unterschiedlichen sozialen Gruppen zu analysieren.
Vorlesung und Seminar sind als vierstündige Veranstaltung konzipiert. Aus diesem Grund müssen beide Veranstaltungen gemeinsam besucht werden.
