239622 Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) (weiterführende Schulen) (Alternative to Teaching Specific Domains) (S) (SoSe 2013)

Contents, comment

To begin the semester we will look at the different understandings of what bilingual education is as political, cultural and educational forces have influenced the objectives of bilingual education in different countries. We will also consider the development of bilingual education models, paying particular attention to the European model of bilingual education, namely Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). Based on this background knowledge, learners will look at how one can create and develop materials appropriate for the bilingual classroom. Other aspects of bilingual teaching will also be discussed so that students are able to plan and teach their own bilingual lessons. During the semester, students will work with a mentor at Gymnasium Heepen in order to plan and conduct their own lesson.
By the end of this course, students will have read a number of texts about bilingual education and should, therefore, possess a good understanding of it and be able to engage in meaningful discourse about the topic. Furthermore, students will know how to apply theoretical knowledge in practice as they teach their own lesson at a bilingual school.
